Abstract
Using the polyurethane (PU) carriers immobilized with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia T3-c capable of degradation of volatile organic compounds, a biofiltration with the high elimination capacity for toluene was successfully achieved. Due to the effective removal of excess biomass by backwashing, the pressure drop in the PU biofilter was maintained less than 80 mmH2O/m-filter at high flow rate of 830 h-1. The average elimination efficiency for toluene was maintained above 90%. Moreover, the extremely high maximum elimination capacity of 3.8 g×m-3×h-1at inlet loading 4.0 g×m-3×h-1 with increasing of inlet toluene concentration from 80 to 900ppm at flow rate 1040h-1 was obtained. The maximum elimination capacity obtained in this study was about 16 folds higher than that of other studies.
