Abstract

The local administration has taken several disconcerted measures to address the air pollution challenge. Imposing Pollution Under Control certification process for in use vehicles, providing unleaded gasoline, promoting LPG fueled vehicles, easing congestion, imposing fines on the polluter, constituting a Task Force, etc., in addition to public awareness programs are some of the steps taken to reduce air pollution. It is not known with any certainty if the current and proposed measures will ensure clean air in Bangalore. This ongoing study is reviewing the workings of the various departments of the state to understand the reasons for perpetuation of the problem. Policy makers, managers, and implementers were interviewed to understand the existing cooperation, coordination, interactions and linkages between the various agencies. NGOs role will be studied, too. Poor appreciation of the problem, lack of capacity, personnel shortages, lack of continuous action, a sense of resignation are few of the impediments to better air quality in Bangalore.
