Abstract
Non motorized public transport services like becak (rickshaw) are still playing an important role for visitors and the people of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. While their importance of such modes of transport is highly recognized, the current conditions and regulations do not allow them to develop in a sustainable manner. This paper investigates the characteristics of becak in Yogyakarta City, user’s perception toward the services provided by becak, traffic violations and their possible causes as well as preferred improvements to encourage the use of it. From the investigation, there are a number of conclusions that can be drawn: (1) becak is seen as a safety valve for employment, (2) operation of becak is difficult to cope with "modern" traffic management scheme developed to suit the need of motorized vehicles, (3) customers require a better service in using becak for various transport purposes, (4) becak could play an important role in providing complementary and feeder services, (5) promoting the use of becak must be accompanied with a strong political support and followed by appropriate regulations.
