Abstract
All Asian cities have been experiencing serious PM pollution for decades. Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, same as many others, has PM problems, associated with the use of energy in transport sector. The main source of PM in Bangkok is diesel vehicles. Controlling diesel pollution problems will require effective control strategies developed from good management, planning, and policy-making. Hence, the CAI-Asia pilot program called ‘Diesel Pollution Reduction Strategies for Bangkok’ is conducted, with the Pollution Control Department (PCD) as focal point, in collaboration with the World Bank, the Land Transport Department (LTD), the United States – Asia Environmental Partnership (US-AEP), other local and international agencies and several vehicles manufacturers.
The objective of the pilot are (a) to develop a better understanding of the factors that influence vehicle emissions and (b) to develop a comprehensive diesel pollution management strategies as well as action plan which will enhance the capacity of local stakeholders in terms of in-use diesel vehicle emission factors. Experiences and lesson learned will be applied to other Asian countries. Website, CD-ROMs, distance learning modules and dissemination workshops will be estblished to promote the research findings.
