ABSTRACT

Imposing customs duties is one means to restrict international trade. Types of customs duties include ad valorem duties (ad duties) that are imposed based on the price, and specific duties that are imposed based on the weight. There are also many Asian countries that do not classify vehicle import duties into used vehicle imports and new vehicle imports. The used car trade policy must be linked the condition of their domestic automobile industry and load on the environment into consideration to restrict imports. Our research project aims at used car trade and its environmental impact in importing countries, taking examples of Japan-Indonesia. We compare the trade data from the different sources, visit used car markets and discuss what is appropriate policy of used car trade. Our presentation will be a mid-term report of the project at BAQ 2004.
