STUDY ON THE ACIDITY AND ACIDIC BUFFERING CAPACITY OF PARTICULATE MATTERS OVER CHINA’S EASTERN COASTAL AREAS IN SPRING

ABSTRACT

The authors studied the acidity and acidic buffering capacity of particulate matters over China’s eastern coastal areas. Results show that TSP generally appear to be acidic, having no buffering capacity for acidification; from the comparison between different areas we could see the acidity of TSP in northern areas is lower than in southern areas. As diameters of particulate matters decrease, the acidity increase, showing strong acidity of fine particles. We could also notice that although the pollution level of particulate matters at high altitudes, their acidification is stronger than at ground level. The regional acidification of particulate matters at high altitudes is an important reason why some areas in China suffer acidic precipitation.
