11 Countries Commit to Better Air

Message from the Minister of Environment and Forests, India

Message from the CAI-Asia Chairperson

The largest conference in 2004 on air quality management in Asia was held in Agra, India from December 6 to 8, 2004. Over 650 people from over 30 countries attended the event. The 3-day conference concluded with commitments from 11 countries to take specific steps to improve their air quality. These countries are Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and India. Updates on the implementation of these actions will be presented at BAQ 2006, which will be held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

For four consecutive years, the Better Air Quality (BAQ) workshops have given hundreds of policymakers from across the region the opportunity to explore new ways to reduce air pollution in their respective cities and countries. BAQ 2004 was hosted by India's Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI-Asia). BAQ 2006 will take into consideration the recommendations of the BAQ 2004 reporting committee.

  • improving the science on which air quality management in Asia is based
  • strengthening the governance structure for urban air quality management in Asia
  • developing stronger stakeholder networks on air quality management in Asia, that involve local and national governments, civil society, academe, private sector, and development agencies
  • clarifying the linkage between urban air quality management and long-range transport of air pollutants in Asia and climate change
