The Dhaka Diesel Clinic: Inspection and Maintenance of Heavy Duty Diesel Buses Md. Rois Uddin Mollah and Bakul Tarafder, Air Quality Management Project, Department of Environment, Dhaka, Bangladesh
ABSTRACT
Diesel vehicle emissions are considered the significant contributor to air pollution in Dhaka City. Diesel fumes are degrading the air quality that is very harmful to health. Air Quality Management Project (AQMP) under the Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment and Forests conducted a program entitled "Diesel Vehicle Maintenance Improvement Clinic" in Dhaka City during 22 February to 28 March 2004. The 80 (Eighty) Drivers and Mechanics participated in this Clinic from different Government and Non-Government organizations. The aim of this Clinic were assessment of current maintenance practices of diesel buses, education level with air pollution concept of drivers/mechanics, identifying any faults which may cause excessive emissions and training provided to the mechanics and drivers on maintenance and repairs. The training was vocational type in nature, consisting of both theoretical and workshop practices. A comprehensive training manual was prepared including working principles of the diesel engine, causes of pollution, and incomplete combustion, smoke measurement, fuel injection system, cooling system, lubricating system, preventive maintenance, servicing and repair and engine overhaul etc. The drivers/mechanics received training in four batches and each batch attended in the course for six days. During the practical class, the trainees were tested emission of the assigned buses, diagnosed related faults, opened and dissembled engine components, tested injection nozzles and injection pump, cleaned different parts, repaired/replaced appropriate parts, refitted parts and finally measured the emission again to determine whether the fault has been rectified or not. Double Decor buses of Ashok Leyland type were used during the practical classes. The trainees themselves took active parts in carrying out the practical works guided by the instructors and diesel experts. The instructors earlier trained the trainees how to carry out these operations systematically and appropriately. Through the clinic the trainees got detailed ideas about air pollution caused by diesel engine vehicles and the remedial measures that might be taken to combat pollution through maintenance and repair. They have also gained knowledge on proper maintenance practices that would lead to a longer life of vehicles and improve the environment likewise economic benefit to the nation. The trainees have become aware of the health effect of air pollution and its remedies. On completion of the program, the trainees have given assurance during the certificate ceremony that they will share their knowledge to others.
