ABSTRACT

The authors performed an observation of air quality indoors and outdoors of an office building compound in downtown Beijing in the spring of 2003. Concentrations of SO2, NO2 and CO indoors and outdoors were monitored simultaneously and IO ratios were calculated. The monitoring sites were located indoors and outdoors of two 3-story office buildings; the central air conditioning system of one building was running 24 hours round, the other one was shut off during off-duty time. The influence of outdoor air pollutants concentrations of SO2, NO2 and CO on indoor concentrations and the influencing patterns are discussed. By comparison of different central ventilation systems, we found that some central ventilation system could bring outdoor air pollutants such as SO2, NO2 and CO into indoor air and greatly increase indoor air pollution when concentrations of outdoor air pollutants were high.
