Effects of lead from vehicle emissions

From 1995 to 1998, about 3,000 people were examined for exposure to leaded gasoline; in 1999, 541 people were examined.

Results

  • High blood-pressure: 10-15% ('95-'98) and 10% ('99)

  • Nerves system damaged, headache, sleepless take 30-40% in 1995-1998 and 16% in 1999; Bio-nerves upset (moisture in legs and hands) takes over 15%

  • Low blood-pressure: 5-7%

  • Damaged Skin (also to be treated): 40% ('95-'98) and 37% ('99) + 12.01% to be treated ('99)

  • Bone ache: 20%

Note: Lead levels in Hanoi are 5-6 times higher than rural areas

  • Airborne lead in Hanoi : 2.62-2.94mg/m3

  • Rural area : 0.48-0.66mg/m3
