Third subway in Guangzhou to be finished in 2005

GUANGZHOU, CHINA: Construction of the city's third subway has made smooth headway in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, and is expected to be completed in 2005.

At cost of 14.99 billion yuan (1.8 billion US dollars), the subway will run 36.1 kilometers via 18 stations on the line.

So far, half of the construction work on the line has been completed.

There are now two subways in operation in Guangzhou, with a length totaling 41.8 kilometers.

Guangzhou, one of the major gates to the outside world in southChina, has planned to build up eight subways by the year 2010, totaling 200 km in length.
