KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: A total of 112 cyclists took part in a 92km road race organised as part of a two-day cycling carnival at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur last weekend.
The event, held in conjunction with the month-long 31st Federal Territory Day celebrations, was organised by the Kuala Lumpur Cycling Association with the co-operation of Kuala Lumpur City Hall on Saturday and Sunday.
The cyclists comprising 22 teams, came from all over peninsula. There was also a team from Singapore.
After the flag-off at 9.30am on Saturday by Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique, the cyclists went on a two-hour journey through Jalan Kuching, Batu Caves, Ulu Yam, Batang Kali, Serendah, Rawang and Selayang before returning to Dataran Merdeka.
Also present was Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ruslin Haji Hassan.
Earlier, there was also a simple ceremony where 20 bicycles were donated to orphaned and underprivileged children chosen by City Hall.
The bicycles, each costing RM170, were sponsored by City Hall.
At 4pm on Sunday, Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Mohamed Isa Abdul Samad flagged off a 70km road race where the route took participants through areas in the city like Jalan Raja Laut and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
Earlier in the afternoon, there were also several rounds of 11.6km road races with categories like Under-17 boys, Women’s Open and Veterans (46 years old and above).
