HA NOI, VIET NAM: Car and motorbike drivers in Hanoi will no longer need to slow down to pay for tolls while going pass the highway checkpoint next April thanks to the application of a "boothless" smartcard system.
On Wednesday, Lam Thieu Quan, director of the Tien Phong Company said his company was preparing to pilot the electronic toll collection system, which uses radio waves to read devices attached onto the vehicles.
Mr. Quan added that his company was also testing a barcodes system that would allow drivers to stop only once at the Hanoi highway checkpoint. Currently, drivers have to stop twice when they pass the highway checkpoint.
The initiatives will help reduce traffic jams and eliminate losses from toll collectors pocketing money.
