The Valley Traffic Police Office (VTPO) has suggested the government to develop and improve the condition of roads and introduce necessary laws and educate the common man about traffic regulations and road safety.
At a seminar titled "Japanese Cooperation in Traffic Awareness" organized by JICA Alumni Association of Nepal here on Thursday, Senior Superintendent of Police Surendra Bahadur Pal said that if the government failed to introduce effective measures traffic could be difficult to manage in the near future.
According to him, vehicle registration in the valley has been increasing by 40 percent annually, and the number of vehicles had reached about 250,000 till the last fiscal year.
"Considering the limited carrying capacity of the roads, the government should either expand them or take appropriate measures to control the registration of vehicles," he said.
With the support of the Japanese government, traffic lights have been set up at 10 different intersections in the valley for managing traffic and ensuring road safety.
Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Tsutomu Hiraoka gave assurance that the government of Japan would continue to support Nepal to develop its road infrastructure.
Inspector General of Police Shyam Bhakta Thapa said that traffic management and road safety have become a deep concern for everybody, and that the government should give priority to seriously enforce traffic laws and regulations as well as educate the people regarding these issues.
