Biomonitoring of Chemical Pollutants in the Terrestrial Environment Using Nuclear-Related Analytical Techniques
S.A. Tarafdar, et al., Seminar on Monitoring of Air Quality and Acid Rain in Bangladesh; Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka, 12 April 1997

Abstract

The present study has been undertaken with a view to supplement the existing airparticulate analysis program for the correlation study between the air particulate and the chemical composition of biomonitor. In the present investigation, 7 moss samples during 1994, 37 moss samples, 6 soil and 6 grass as reference samples during 1995 were collected from the industrial, commercial, residential and rural areas of the Dhaka Metropolitan City. The growth of mosses depends on the weather condition like temperature, humidity and rainfall. Their growing season started in the month of August and attained maturity in late October. The concentration of about 12 elements (K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Br and Pb) were determined in the moss samples collected during 1994 by applying PIXE method. The elemental analysis of moss, soil and grass samples collected during 1995 were carried out by source excited X-ray fluorescence method using109 Cd annular source. The concentration of about 11 elements (K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cr, An, Br, Rb, Pb and Sr) were determined. The elemental analysis were carried out using concentration calibration constructed from NBS Orchard Leave (SRM-1517) for moss and grass and soil-7 for soil samples respectively.
