Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems only work optimal if combined with planning for cycling, walking and a reallocation of public space, according to Enrique Peñalosa, the former Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia and the founding father of the BRT planning. His model gives priority to people and to quality of life as well as it emphasizes the importance of integral transportations systems. The combination of BRT with walking and cycling facilities make cities economically vital, socially enjoyable and environmentally friendly. Cycling and walking are also the most important feeders for public transport.
On the 4th October 2005, I-ce (Interface for Cycling Expertise) and TRIPP (Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Programme, IIT Delhi) organise in Delhi an interactive workshop on combined planning for bus transport, cycling and walking, in cooperation with the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities, the Sustainable Urban Transport Program (GTZ), and ITDP.
More than 20 cities in Asia are implementing or planning Bus Rapid Transit systems and facilities for cycling and walking. Governments, civil society organisations and private sector involved in this process will participate in the interactive workshop. This workshop is the first one developed in Asia concerning integration of BRT and NMT. It will explore the demand and best conditions for a network that supports long term planning and implementation.
The workshop takes place during the annual meeting of Locomotives Programme, the Low Cost Mobility Initiatives Support Programme, in which partners from nine developing countries from South East Asia, Latin America and Africa participate. On the agenda of the annual meeting are the first cycling heritage ride in Delhi, on Sunday the 2d of October, presentations on the Locomotives programme on the 3d of October and a cycling tour to visit NMT facilities in Delhi on the 5th of October.
