DRAFT Project Inception Report, March 2005

TA AFG 37102, Kabul Air Quality Management

Kabul Air Quality Management (KAQM) project is under preparation by the Government of Afghanistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The KAQM project will assist in the development of a comprehensive air quality management program for Kabul, and approach that can then be replicated in other urban areas through Afghanistan.

The project will involve the siting and installation of air pollution sampling devices for Particulate Matter of aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 microns (µm) (PM-10), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). Additional parameters, such as Ozone (O3) and Carbon Monoxide (CO), benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX), and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) may also be sampled following establishment of the proposed 8-station core air quality sampling network.

Sonic anemometers, as well as CO and O3 samplers will be installed at a subset of 4 stations. Sonic anemometers will provide wind speed and wind direction data, for determination of air pollutant transport patterns in and around Kabul.
