IANS (13 May 2005) DELHI, INDIA: The Delhi government is studying a proposal to introduce a fleet of solar-powered battery electric buses in the city prior to hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Reva Electric Car Company (earlier post) is developing a 16-seat prototype.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has offered to fund further research for developing 20- and 32-seat bus prototypes, as well as a prototype for three-wheelers.

Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal said the government is prepared to offer the Reva company Rs.160 million (US$3.7 million) for developing and manufacturing 100 buses and another Rs.100 million (US$2.3 million) for bus platforms which would double up as supply points for replacement charged batteries.

More details as they come.
