Asia-Europe Environment Forum - 1/3 of Our Planet: What Can Asia and Europe Do for Sustainable Development?
23-25 November 2005, Bidakara Convention Center, Jakarta, Indonesia

The Asia-Europe Environment Forum is co-organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the Hanns-Seidel Foundation (HSF) of Germany, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) of Japan, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). "1/3rd of our Planet: What can Asia and Europe do for Sustainable Development" is proudly hosted by the Indonesian Biodiversity Foundation (KEHATI).

In terms of population, Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries from Asia and Europe constitute close to a third of the world's population. The conference aims to be a platform for dialogue on environment and sustainable development issues. The event promises to be the largest meeting of its kind, drawing up to 250 high-profile international personalities from Asia and Europe.

An Indonesian and a European speaker prominent in the field of environment and sustainable development will deliver keynote addresses to open the event.

The event shall be converging point for workshops hosted by organisations prominent in the field of the environment and sustainable development.

Workshops already planned for the meeting cover:

  • Community-based Natural Resources Management: Challenges and Opportunities (hosted by KEHATI Biodiversity Foundation-Indonesia)
  • Implementation of National Sustainable Development Strategies by 2005: Did Asia and Europe Meet this MDG? (hosted by Earth Council Asia-Pacific)
  • Cross-border environmental protection in Central Europe and Northeast Asia (hosted by Hanns Seidel Foundation- Korea)
  • A Partnership Approach to Education for Sustainable Development (hosted by UNESCO-Bangkok)
  • Seizing Biz Opportunities in Sustainable Development for Financial Institutions (hosted by the Regional Institute of Environmental
    Technology-Singapore)
  • Planet, People, and Profit: Fostering Sustainable Development and Addressing Climate Change through the Clean Development Mechanism (hosted by the Hamburg Institute of International Economics and Pelangi Indonesia)
  • Workshop on Chemicals/Waste (hosted by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency -Swedish Environmental Secretariat in Asia)
  • Sustainable Transport - Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities, Partnership for Sustainable Urban Transport Program (hosted by Asian Development Bank)

Reports from workshop sessions will be presented to the audience as a wrap-up, paving the way for a final report of recommendations to be
addressed to the 38 governments of the ASEM process and the European Commission and widely distributed to civil society organisations

Exhibition space will be open to the public will provided in conjunction to the conference to facilitate networking and information-sharing among conference participants and visitors. Organisations hosting workshops are encouraged to showcase their activities. Organisations interested in setting up a booth may also contact the secretariat for more details.

Sponsorships are available for a limited number of participants who are nationals from ASEM countries, namely: Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Myanmar, Netherlands, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore,
Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom and Vietnam

Workshops should adhere to the following criteria:

  • Asia-Europe relevance. The central issue each workshop shall be of keen interest to various audiences (public, private sector, social sectors) of the ASEM.
  • Policy relevance. The central issue of each workshop shall currently or potentially be on the agenda of the ASEM dialogue process. (See <http://www.aseminfoboard.org/> for details)
  • Multistakeholder participation. Each workshop shall not narrowly focus on analysing or prescribing what the role and responsibility of one particular sector alone but for all stakeholders.
  • Knowledge-sharing and capacity building. Each workshop shall contribute to structured dissemination of knowledge on central environmental issues.
  • Sustainable economic growth. Each workshop shall explore actions toward balanced improvement in environmental, social issues, as well as economic dimensions.

Workshop proposals should include:

  • Title of the workshop.
  • Workshop duration (number of hours/maximum of 1 1/2 days).
  • Names of initiators and organising institutions (partnerships between European and Asian institutions are highly encouraged), and one contact address.
  • Description (How does the workshop adhere to the conference criteria e.g. Asia-Europe dimension, policy relevance, etc.) (500-1,500 words).
  • Outputs/outcomes envisaged; possible resource persons (up to 4 speakers): (indicate confirmed speakers).
  • Number of participants.
