United States-Asia Environment Partnership (USAEP), a project of USAID, with support from Mr. Michael Walsh, has been working with Vietnam Standards Center, Directorate for Standards and Quality Controls (STAMEQ) and Vietnam Register (VR) in Vietnam to tighten the fuel and vehicle standards. The work has involved working with key fuel and vehicle stakeholders to review conformity to Euro standards and gaps, undertake a cost-benefit analysis, and provide policy recommendations to expedite the adoption of and conformity to Euro standards. To promote the uptake of tightened standards in Vietnam for vehicles and fuels and provide stakeholders with a clear background to the regional situation, the USAEP in cooperation with The Asia Foundation (TAF) will co-sponsor Vietnam Standards Center, Directorate for Standards and Quality Controls (STAMEQ) and Vietnam Register (VR) to organise the back-to back workshops, one in Hanoi on 19 July and one in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) on 21 July.
Objectives of the workshop:
- To share information and international experiences on adoption/enforcement of Euro vehicle emission and fuel quality standards
- To perform Cost - Effectiveness Analysis as a bases to assist Vietnam with the development of a timeframe for Euro standards
- To obtain Government and stakeholders buy-in and commitment for the proposed road map of Euro standards for vehicles emisison and fuels quality
- To launch the revised fuel quality specifications (Euro 2)
Participants will include government agencies (e.g. VR, STAMEQ, MOT, MOI, MOST, MONRE, MOF, MOH), fuels importers/retailers, oil and vehicle industries, NGOs, other stakeholdes and donors. Approximately 100 attendees are expected to attend each workshop (Hanoi and HCMC).
