Goals & Objectives

• Provide an inspiring environment for fruitful exchange and lively discussions on local strategies for sustainability with a special focus on poverty alleviation;
• Strengthen cooperation between cities and local governments worldwide and in particular local governments in the African region;
• Review progress, study the challenges and discuss effective strategies for the future implementation of ICLEI's campaigns and programmes and delivery of ICLEI services;
• Assess progress made by local governments in implementing the Millennium Development Goals and the Plan of Implementation of the 2002 UN World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg;
• Provide a platform for interaction between ICLEI member local governments and United Nations agencies, governments, financing institutions, donors, businesses, NGOs and other partners working towards achieving local sustainability;
• Adopt ICLEI's Strategic Plan 2007-2012.
