The goal of TransMilenio is to establish a sustainable mass urban transport system. The new Bus Rapit Transit (BRT) System is part of a comprehensive strategy including driving restrictions downtown, restrictions on car usage, efforts to reduce the supply of transport and integrating transit systems with Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) e.g. through the construction of bicycle lanes.
The Main objectives of the BRT system are:
- Improved mobility for all social and economic classes by offering an efficient and affordable transit system reducing congestion and trip times and thus reducing macro-economic costs of transport.
- Increased attractiveness of public transport thus reversing the declining share of transit and moving toward more sustainable transport
- Reduction of air and noise pollution as well as CO2-emmisions. Improved air quality again results in less health problems specifically respiratory diseases.
These objectives are achieved by establishing an efficient, safe, rapid, convenient, comfortable and effective modern mass transit system ensuring high ridership levels.
