Eco-taxation on Automobiles
2004, study report by MSE, Chennai and NIPFP, New Delhi, India

Air quality is a crucial factor in determining public health. Though various activities, such as, industry, transport and household contribute to air pollution in varying proportions, contribution of vehicular pollution is the most significant one in many cities in India.

The mix and the growth in automobile population are important factors in determining the contribution of auto emissions to the overall air pollution in a city. In India, there does not exist the pollution source inventory data, which can quantitatively assess the contribution of automobiles and the other sources to the pollution load in Indian cities. However, there are few independent studies that have tried to assess the contribution of transport in the total pollution load in two cities namely, Delhi and Bombay.
