Now, gizmos to display air pollution level
Electro-Magnetic Display boards (EMDs) were installed in the city to display air pollution levels by the public sector unit Gail (India) Limited and the West Bengal Pollution Control Board. (Express News Service)

Kolkata, February 8: Electro-Magnetic Display boards (EMDs) were installed in the city to display air pollution levels by the public sector unit Gail (India) Limited and the West Bengal Pollution Control Board.

The EMDs, put up at some important crossings, would display the level of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and Suspended Dust Particles (SDP) in the air along with temperature and humidity.

Speaking on the occasion, West Bengal Pollution Control Board chairman Sudeep Banerjee said that the data input would be provided by the air quality monitoring stations of the board at different places.

Claiming that Kolkata is not the "most polluted metropolis in the country" as is commonly perceived, he said the board, along with the environment department of the state government, had been able to drastically reduce the air pollution level in recent years.

Environment and Information and Technology Minister Manab Mukherjee said that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation had undertaken a large-scale initiative to make the city greener and cleaner.

Gail director (marketing) U D Choubey said that the company’s proposed venture to source from Asansol or Jharia to supply Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to the city would help contain vehicular pollution significantly. Gail has spent Rs 20 lakh for the EMDs and plans to put up similar boards in some other points of the city.
