T&E is a European umbrella for non-governmental organisations working in the field of transport and the environment, promoting sustainable transport in Europe; which means an approach to transport that is environmentally responsible, economically sound and socially just.
History
The European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E) was created in 1989 with the realisation that many political decisions that influence the environmental damage caused by transport - both positively and negatively - are taken at a European level. These involve getting the prices right, vehicle emission limits, fuel quality standards, taxes, funding of infrastructure, safety requirements, air quality standards, deregulation and more. "Europe" offers a great opportunity to work to higher standards of environmental protection.
Membership
Today T&E has some 40 non-governmental organisations in 20 countries, including EFTA and Central and Eastern Europe. The annual general assembly, T&E's highest decision-making body, is held in March. See About T&E / Members for more information about our members.
Publications
T&E frequently commissions studies, and publishes its own reports on important issues in the field of transport and environment. All reports are published in English, the working language of the Federation. Most come with a user-friendly summary, some of which are published in languages other than English. T&E also produces a Bulletin 10 times each year, as well as fact-sheets and position papers on relevant topics. Click here for a subject index of all the documents available on T&E's website.
How T&E works
There is a European multiplier effect to T&E's work by virtue of its being a European federation. Its campaigns and actions are based on a two-pronged approach: the T&E secretariat in Brussels works closely in various ways together with the European institutions, while member organisations have close contacts with their decision-makers and/or effect campaigns at national levels.
To carry out co-ordinated campaigns, co-operation and information exchange is essential. T&E provides the members and its enlarged network of stakeholders with regular news, briefings, publications and press releases, as well as a monthly newsletter. Members use the information from T&E in their awareness raising activities and campaigns and in turn inform T&E of their own activities.
Apart from "vertical" co-ordination with members, T&E emphasises "horizontal" co-ordination: close contacts are kept with environmental and other NGOs, both in and outside Brussels. In addition, T&E liaises with professionals from other NGOs, the railways, the car industry, road haulage, shipping, employers and entrepreneurs. This also ensures a broad, multi-sectoral approach to environmental problems.
T&E has a very broad remit and its activities cover all modes of transport, including road, rail, air, water and non-motorised transport, as well as goods and passenger transport.
T&E tries to find a good balance in all its work between re-active work - following the agenda of the political institutions in Brussels and the member states; and pro-active work - setting the political agenda by bringing new issues to the attention of the decision-makers and the general public.
Areas of work
T&E works on all areas of transport and environment policy which help us achieve our goal of achieving an environmentally sensible European transport policy framework. To support our work, we issue various publications on relevant themes; information and communication where relevant across the EU, and within the T&E network; and publication of the T&E Bulletin. Much of our work extends over time, while other work is short-term and issue- or project-specific.
T&E Bulletin
T&E publishes its own four to six page newsletter, the T&E Bulletin, which appears 10 times a year (monthly except January and September). It gives information on recent developments in transport and environment policy, T&E initiatives, opinions, new publications and important national news.
