The Urumqi municipal government organized a forum called "Fourth Annual Meeting for Capital Cities of Western Provinces in China." The Vice Mayor of Urumqi chaired the forum. The Urumqi Environmental Protection Bureau successfully engaged the municipal government agencies and other participating sectors in a discussion of environmentally friendly actions for western Chinese cities. The workshop discussed and shared experiences from other countries and institutions on air quality management - related issues such as the establishment of air quality monitoring systems. Several presentations on controlling emissions from mobile sources, including sustainable urban transportation measures like bus rapid transit systems were made.
The Asian Development Bank, Energy Foundation, CAI-Asia, Sino-Italian Program, U.S. Embassy, Cummins, Nissan, and Nanhua provided support for the workshop.
