Cleaner production as climate investment – Integrated assessment in Taiyuan City, China
Heidi E. Staff Mestl, Kristin Aunan, Jinghua Fang, Hans Martin Seip, John Magne Skjelvik, Haakon Vennemo

Abstract

Taiyuan, one of the most polluted cities in the world, is the first cleaner production demonstration city of China. Using the impact pathway approach to integrated assessment we analyse the CO2-reduction potential and local health benefits due to reduced particle emissions of six cleaner production projects in the city. The projects have quite different CO2-reduction and co-benefit potentials, and also quite different economic costs. Our results show that emission conditions (especially stack height) and meteorology are important for the estimated co-benefit potential. The possibility for foreign funding as CDM projects is discussed.
