We wish to inform you that the AirMAC has initiated action to clean indoor air too.
Indoor air pollution pilot project commenced
The AirMAC & National Building Research Organization (NBRO) launched indoor air pollution pilot project (IAPP) on 3rd August 2006. The first consultation workshop was held at the CETRAC conference hall.
Experts on indoor air quality such as Dr. K.R.R. Mahanama, Dr. R.L. Wijayamuni and Mr. R.M. Amarasekara enlightened the audience on different impacts of indoor air quality. The audience provided their valuable inputs to structure the project better.
Aim of the project
To assess the level of indoor air pollution and its effects on the occupants in urban and rural populations, and based on the results, propose mitigatory measures
Main components of the project
1. Indoor air quality monitoring
2. Socio-economic and health status study
3. Data analysis and reporting
4. Proposing mitigatory measures
When stating indoor air quality, ‘indoors’ means to "confined spaces" to which a person may be exposed in normal day-to-day work, Spaces may include home, work place or school. Air quality monitoring in this project is directed at ascertaining air pollution levels at homes.
Indoor air pollution will be monitored in the following categories of populations.
1. Rural poor (without electricity, use biomass for cooking)
2. Rural middle class (with electricity, use biomass for cooking)
3. Urban poor (no electricity, use biomass)
4. Urban middle class (with electricity, use biomass)
5. Urban middle class (with electricity, use LPG or other) for comparison
