Biodiesel: Cultivating Alternative Fuels
Charles W. Schmidt, Environmental Health Perspectives Volume 115, Number 2, February 2007

With the uncertainty of prices of petrol fuels fluctuating in the market, use of biodiesel for vehicles is increasingly explored. The article looks into the history of biodiesel use, its implications on air quality and corresponding policies in the US. The pros and cons of using biodiesel as an alternative for conventional diesel is discussed. Ultimately, biodiesel could offer a ray of hope for a world squeezed by declining oil supplies, pollution, and global warming. But it's also an industry beset with growing pains and the threat of unsustainable production, particularly in the developing world. If one thing is certain, it's that biodiesel is a technology to watch. Before long, it could be the fuel of choice for millions.
