The Environment Monitor (2004) aims at raising awareness about the environmental challenges of urbanization in Mongolia. The report is divided into sections; the first presents an overview of the urban transformation in Mongolia based on changes in the structure and distribution of the population; the second focuses on the environmental pressures created by urbanization, providing data on air pollution, water availability and quality, solid waste management, and land degradation. The third section summarizes government responses to urban environmental challenges. The final section outlines the main challenges for improving and strengthening environmental management in urban areas.
