CAI-Asia and CAI-Asia China Project Office were welcomed at the "Regional Air Quality Management in Rapidly Developing Economic Zones: Science- Technology-Harmony" workshop that was held in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province of China, on 12-13 March 2007. Presentations from CAI-Asia and CAI-Asia China Project were well-received by the audience, some of whom appreciated the wide coverage of the activities of CAI-Asia including its China activities. Some international partners reconfirmed their willingness to support CAI-Asia.
The workshop aimed at facilitating communication and information sharing among policy makers, scientists, industry stakeholders, and international experts., It was supported by China’s State Environmental Protection Administration, US EPA, Guangdong Provincial and Municipal EPBs and institutions, and Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department. The Workshop was designed to advance the understanding of regional air pollution, provide recommendations to decision makers, and develop and coordinate AQM plans across multiple provinces and cities. CAI-Asia was invited to present its findings on AQM capability across Asia and its China activities. Mr. Kong Ha, Chairman of CAI-Asia, delivered a keynote speech on "Urban Air Quality Management Capabilities in Selected Asian Cities". The presentation focused on the current status of air quality in selected Asian cities as compared to the WHO guidelines and also shared the results of a Benchmarking Study of CAI-Asia on air quality management capacity in selected Asian cities.
Mr. Tang Dagang, from the CAI-Asia China Project, provided an overview of CAI-Asia China Project Activities to date and its work plan in 2007 in his presentation entitled "Working towards Strengthening AQM at Local Levels – CAI-Asia China Project Activities".
