Abstract:
Bus Rapid Transit is one of the most efficient modes of transport that has been developed in the last few years. It has been praised for its low cost and high levels of ridership (sometimes to the point that it has reached levels seen only in underground systems). The improvements of Bus Rapid Transit have been shown to generate a great impact on travel time, emissions, road safety and other key measures of both sustainability and urban economy. There are also other, more subtle, impacts of Bus Rapid Transit that can be taken into account when evaluating their sustainability in economic, social and environmental terms, as well as its political and urban dimensions. These impacts will be described and evaluated, and a schematic methodology to measure impacts in new systems will be described. Examples from world renowned TransMilenio will be used, but also from other successful BRT systems such as Jakarta, Beijing, Seoul and others.
