London has introduced the Low Emission Zone charging under which diesel vehicles which do not meet Euro 3 standards are charged up to $ 400 per day if they want use their truck or bus in the Greater London area. This is perhaps one of the most significant vehicle charging scheme for gross polluting vehicles. Such a scheme may be appropriate for our cities that are highly polluted and congested. In most cases, Asian cities fail to sufficiently enforce vehicle emissions standards for heavy-duty diesel vehicles.
The affected vehicles are older diesel-engine lorries, buses, coaches, large vans, minibuses and other heavy vehicles that are derived from lorries and vans such as motor caravans and motorised horse boxes. There will be a phased introduction of the scheme from 4 February 2008 through to January 2012. Cars and motorcycles are not included in the Low Emission Zone.
