EC grants to Tra Vinh for maintenance and planting new urban trees
Tra Vinh province has just implemented the project “Maintenance of ancient trees and planting new urban trees” of 227,017 EUR (equivalent to $5.8 billion) sponsored by European Community (EC).

Tra Vinh province has just implemented the project "Maintenance of ancient trees and planting new urban trees" of 227,017 EUR (equivalent to $5.8 billion) sponsored by European Community (EC). This project will last until December, 2008. The project components are mobilizing public to concentrate on the maintenance of about 700 over-100-year old trees and plant more than 10,000 trees to improve environment and to meet the level-three aesthetic criteria of sustainable development city.

The project is in the period of implementing ancient trees maintenance procedures including collecting statistical data on quantity, categories, recent situation drawings, medical records of each tree. Pestilent infected trees have the roots films for the purpose of monitoring and treatment. The project is also appealing and mobilizing about 50,000 labor days from socio-political organizations workers and communities for planting new trees and taking care of 10,000 green trees mainly from categories: hopea ordorata, dipterocarpus, shorea and dendrobium aphyllum. These trees are planted on 9 new road routes and entertainment areas, parks, industrial zones, river banks in urban areas.

Tra Vinh province has 9,801 shade and flower green trees of more than 30 species, of which the biggest quantity belongs to hopea ordorata, dipterocarpus, tamarindus indica and lageerstroemia speciosa; and the most precious ones are over 1,000 over-10-metre trees shading throughout 38 streets in the province. At present, the green trees density of Tra Vinh province reaches at 14.27m2/person (approximately at the standard criteria of green trees of first-grade city) which is the highest one in comparison with Mekong delta urban areas.
