The United Nations Centre for Regional Development is assisting the Philippine Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) in developing an integrated national strategy & action plan in order to achieve environmentally sustainable transportation in the Philippines as part of the SUMA program of the CAI-Asia Center. In order to promote effective collaboration and cooperation between the CAI-Asia Center and the DOTC, a Letter of Intent was signed to formalize their cooperation at the 3rd Regional EST Forum recently held in Singapore (17-19 March 2008).
The EST strategy will be one of the components of the Philippines’ National Land Transportation Policy Framework and Strategies to be formally adopted by the country this year. In addition to an integrated national strategy & action plan for EST, the DOTC is also establishing a program to promote EST to other Philippine cities by adopting the experience of the CIVITAS program of the European Union.
The CAI-Asia Center provides technical assistance, where relevant, to the DOTC in the development and implementation of its plans for an integrated national EST strategy & action plan and for promoting EST in various cities through exchange of experience and the development of pilot projects.
