In preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, the government of Beijing has taken a lot of measures which target the significant sources of air pollution in the city such as coal-burning, transportation, construction and industrial activities.
Last February, the Beijing Municipal Administration of Environmental Protection, stressed the city's commitment to further improving the air quality this year. The goal is to have 70% of all the days in the year as Grade 2 (or better) days. Currently, Beijing is in the 14th phase of the implementation of its air control measures (from February 21, 2008). In the previous 13 phases, some 200 such measures were carried out and resulted in continuous improvements in the air quality, despite the city's rapid economic and infrastructure developments. The government will also be implementing temporary measures from July 20th to September 20th to guarantee good air quality during the actual games.
