Malaysia has enjoyed one of the least polluted urban environments in Asia, however, rapic economic growth led to a substantial increase of vehicular and industrial emissions. In Kuala Lumpur large numbers of vehicles account for 92 % of air pollution with elevated levels of CO2, SO2 and NOx. Another source of pollution that has led to the state of emergency and gained widespread international attention has been transboundary haze resulting from slash-and-burn cultivation mainly in Sumatra and Kalimantan (Indonesia). - United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific - Transport and Tourism Division
