Health Effects Institute (HEI) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Science. HEI seeks as Director of Science a highly accomplished, energetic, and articulate leader who brings a strong science background and the capacity to interact effectively with a wide variety of individuals. This is a unique opportunity for a top scientific leader to join HEI’s leadership team and to contribute to its increasingly critical mission. Reporting to the President, the Director is the strategic and administrative head of scientific operations.
The Director of Science is a pivotal member of the HEI team, overseeing internal operations and interacting with key external constituencies, including the Board of Directors, scientific committees, sponsors, and the scientific community. S/He works closely with a broad range of stakeholders and HEI team members in all aspects of the organization’s scientific work, including strategic planning, research project management, and scientific oversight and review.
The ideal candidate must possess a broad view of health effects science, solid management capabilities and experience, outstanding communication skills, and the capacity to lead, guide, and mentor a highly capable and accomplished group of scientists. The Director of Science will have a strategic orientation, a strong record as a consensus builder, and a demonstrated ability to organize diverse staff and other experts including the ability to operate as a facilitator and partner to world-class scientific leaders and policy-makers. The next Director will be an exceptional collaborator and bring outstanding managerial experience and the capability to oversee complicated processes and institute best practices. Excellent writing and editing skills are essential. An earned doctorate in biological or physical sciences, epidemiology, public health, or other relevant field, or equivalent
experience, is required.

Health Effects Institute is looking for one or two graduate-level interns during the summer of 2008. The interns' main duties will include working with HEI scientific staff to research the areas of currently funded studies and to assist in writing reports about these studies and other reviews of key literature in air pollution health effects. The position is compensated ($12/hour).
Applicants should have a strong background in science relevant to HEI, such as epidemiology, toxicology, or assessment of exposure to pollutants. Previous interns have been in Master's degree or Ph.D. programs. An interest in air pollution and health issues in Asia is particularly helpful.

Health Effects Institute is a nonprofit organization that provides impartial, relevant scientific information about health effects of air pollution to decisionmakers in government and industry. Its core funding comes equally from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and industry. HEI is funding interesting epidemiologic, toxicologic, and other research at universities and research centers in many countries.
HEI seeks to hire a Research Assistant to assist Staff Scientists by gathering and organizing information and writing summaries on topics relevant to current projects. Backgrounds in biology, chemistry, toxicology, epidemiology, environmental science, and mechanical or environmental engineering are of most interest. This position offers an opportunity for someone with initial science training to obtain experience as s/he considers next steps in education or career development. The position requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a discipline listed above.

- Provide support for technical research & analysis on clean air/transport issues & concerns
- Prepare project work plans and activity designs

- Liaise and coordinate with project partners in government, academe, private sector & civil society

Essential qualifications are:

- Relevant work experience in project development, project implementation, and development communications
- High computer literacy

The China Sustainable Cities Center (CSCC) is a new center of expertise to promote clean transportation technologies and sustainable urban design as integral parts of China’s rapid urbanization. This center will work directly with cities, bringing international best practice expertise and building local capacity to promote sustainable urban designs.
CSCC is a new center within the China Sustainable Energy Program, which has been operating in Beijing since 1999 to help China promote the cleanest energy technologies, especially energy efficiency and renewable energy. <www.efchina.org>
CSCC seeks a responsible, energetic, and highly professional individual for the position of Executive Director.
1. RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Director of the China Sustainable Energy Program, the Executive Director will:
- Execute the goals and strategies of CSCC in coordination with CSEP’s Chief Representative, and relevant Program Officers (Green Buildings, Sustainable Transportation, and Sustainable Urban Planning);
- Guide the expansion of CSCC to take on clean transit and sustainable urban planning expertise, including overseeing hiring plans;
- Actively develop networks in the field with Mayors, Governors, and their staff involved in
urban planning and transit;
- Build teams of Chinese and international best-practice consultants who will support leading Chinese cities to develop sustainable urban design;
- Prepare grant recommendations for supporting Chinese think tanks and government institutions who are leaders on sustainable transport and green urban design;
- Sponsor workshops and trainings for China’s cities, bringing in international consultants as needed;
- Assist the consultants to summarize international experiences with sustainable cities;
- Manage CSCC’s daily operations, including personnel management;
- Seek and develop funding partnerships with bilateral and multi-lateral organizations such as the World Bank, United Nations Development Program, Asian Development Bank, etc.;
- Maintain excellent communications with all program stakeholders;
- Accompany Chinese officials and others engaged in CSCC projects on travel tours to the U.S. or other international "best urban development policy practices" sites;
- Be willing to travel within China and internationally to accomplish the tasks listed above.
2. QUALIFICATIONS
- Leadership experience in the field of sustainable urban development especially clean transit and urban design;
- A Ph.D. or master’s degree or equivalent in related fields;
- Strong interest in non-profit work and international cooperation projects;
- Strong understanding of the dynamics of sustainable city development in China; experience dealing with technical and political issues within related sectors in China;
- Fluency in English and Mandarin with the ability to translate and draft documents, and make professional presentations in both languages;
- Solid computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and relevant engineering software;
- Ability to work well under pressure, both independently and as a team member and leader, and to be a creative problem solver;
- An ability to demonstrate at all times an energetic, "can do," cordial, and professional demeanor and attitude;
- An ability to be flexible, responsive, and timely.
