Organization Description
The Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI-Asia) Center is a non-stock, non-profit organization based in Manila. Recently incorporated in June 2007, CAI-Asia Center started in 2001 as a multi-sector network that promoted measures to improve air quality in the region through a regional technical grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank and the US Agency for International Development / US-Asia Environmental Partnership. Since then, CAI-Asia has become an acknowledged knowledge manager and regional convener on urban air quality in Asia.

CAI-Asia recognizes the need to address mobile sources of air pollution. As such, CAI-Asia has undergone projects and programs on knowledge management, policy development, capacity building, and investments to reduce vehicle emissions and to promote sustainable transportation.

Involvement in SUMA
As a SUMA partner, CAI-Asia Center contributes to knowledge management, capacity building, networking, policy development and lobbying, pilot activities, and project management. Together with ADB, they form the joint coordination committee that supervises program implementation. CAI-Asia Center will develop and implement SUMA knowledge management strategy; establish a network of local institutions and experts on sustainable urban transportation (SUT); spearhead the 2007 and 2008 updates of Compendium of AQM and SUT programs and projects; organize regional workshops on SUT; and provide specialized inputs to SUT projects and CAI-Asia local networks such as the Philippine Tricycle Management Proposal and Feasibility Study for BRT in Metro Manila.
