ITDP

Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)

Organization Description
The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) was founded in 1985 to promote environmentally sustainable and socially equitable transportation worldwide. ITDP works with city governments and local advocacy groups to implement projects that reduce poverty, pollution, and oil dependence.

ITDP primarily focuses on work in the following program areas: Developing high-quality, low-cost mass transit; Planning and advocacy for cycling and walking; and Strengthening the bicycle and rickshaw industries. ITDP is also playing an increasingly critical role in several emerging areas: Revitalizing city centers; Bridging distances: transport for healthcare; and Managing traffic demand. In Asia, the primary objective of ITDP projects is to shift travel from private motorized vehicles to buses and non-motorized vehicles, thereby reducing pollution.

Involvement in SUMA
As a SUMA partner, ITDP will focus on on-the-ground activities such as a motorized 2-3 wheeler program in Asia and bus rapid transit in Ahmedabad. For their motorized 2-3 wheeler program, ITDP will assess the role of 2-3 wheelers in urban transport, and later develop guidelines and regulations for their integration in urban transportation. For the Ahmedabad BRT, ITDP will help the city produce an Operational Plan, Physical Design, Business Plan, and pilot the 2-3 wheeler road design guidelines on the BRT system. Together with GTZ-SUTP, they will develop the training course on travel demand management and fiscal measures as part of SUMA’s Train the Trainers program.
