United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD)
Organization Description
UNCRD was established in 1971 as the only United Nations organization promoting regional development in developing and transitional economies in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Latin America. The three key components of UNCRD are - Human Security, Environment, and Disaster Management, supplemented by a Training unit to meets the needs of the developing countries in the region (http://www.uncrd.or.jp/env/est).
The Environment Programme currently focuses on activities dealing with environmentally sustainable transport (EST), sustainable production and consumption/3R, and solid waste management issues in Asia. UNCRD has also established an inter-governmental Regional EST Forum with a subsidiary expert group being the technical arm of the Forum, to address the issues and needs of the developing countries in Asia in the area of environment and transport. A mayors’ forum on EST was similarly established for this purpose.

Involvement in SUMA
As a SUMA partner, UNCRD will focus on policy development and lobbying. UNCRD’s SUMA activities will primarily be in the development of national framework and action plan for environmentally sustainable transportation in the Philippines.
