The SSA Initiative which is part of the overall World Bank Clean Air Initiative began in 1998 with the core partnership of the Norwegian and the Belgian Agencies for Development Cooperation. Since 2001, the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) has also greatly contributed to the Initiative. Other donors include Canada, through the Montreal Twinning Program (involving the cities of Cotonou and Dakar), and the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA).

Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning (AECLP) .
The Alliance is a national public interest organization formed by leaders in public health, environmental protection, affordable housing, and civil rights. The Alliance seeks to protect children from lead and other environmental health hazards in and around their homes by advocating for policy solutions and building capacity for primary prevention in communities throughout the US and around the world. Founded in 1990 to focus a comprehensive solution to childhood lead poisoning, the Alliance was designed to have the technical capacity and comprehensive reach across disciplines needed to effect change on a broad scale.

International Organization of Public Transport (UITP)
Founded in 1885, UITP is the world-wide association of urban and regional passenger transport operators, their authorities and suppliers. Located in Brussels and with over 2.000 members from nearly 80 countries, UITP seeks to promote a better understanding of the potential of Public Transport.

Managing the Environment Locally in Sub-Saharan Africa (MELISSA)
Launched in 1996, the MELISSA Program (Managing the Environment Locally in Sub Saharan Africa) has the goal of supporting and facilitating the improvement of the local environment through partnership development and knowledge management. In this way, the Program contributes to finding the balance between social equity, economic advancement and sustainable development to ensure improved living conditions and a better quality of life for urban, peri-urban and rural citizens.

Municipal Development Program (MDP)
The Municipal Development Program (MDP) was launched in 1991 with the Bank as the executing agency and with the support of several donors to assist governments in precisely this regard. The Program reflects the belief that since locally-elected officials are usually more in touch with the public than their central government counterparts, there is greater likelihood that the policies chosen will reflect the concerns of the communities and also be more accountable to them.
