Urban Air Quality Management (UAQM) in Latin American Cities pprocee@worldbank.org.

The Urban Air Quality Management in Latin American Cities course was the first interactive distance learning course offered by the Initiative. It will be offered again from May 9 until June 27, 2002.

It was first delivered from October until December 2000, and the second delivery took place from May till July, 2001. A total number of 500 people participated in both courses. These courses were developed by the WBI Environment and Natural Resources Unit (WBIEN) in collaboration with two other Clean Air Initiative partners: USEPA and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO).

By combining expertise and resources from the three main partners, the course focuses on the use of analytical tools that emphasize a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial approach to monitor, prevent and control air pollution problems and to reduce their impacts on human health and the environment. The course is divided into the following eight modules:

1. General Introduction to the Distance Learning Course
2. Sources and Emission Inventories
3. Air Quality Monitoring and Modeling
4. Health and Environmental Impact Assessment of Air Pollution
5. Policies and Strategies for Air Pollution Control
6. Air Pollution Control & Prevention: Urban Transport
7. Air Pollution Control & Prevention: Industrial and Energy Sectors
8. Action Plans to Reduce Urban Air Pollution

The partner cities have clearly expressed their interest in improving the capacity of their technical and administrative staff in managing urban air quality issues. This training need is shared by many other Latin American cities, whether capital or secondary cities, that are not benefiting from the technical assistance activities of the program. The Initiative's partners have a wealth of technical and institutional knowledge on the subject of urban air quality management, and on this basis two courses have been developed.
