Santiago is currently implementing its air quality plan, and joined the Initiative to transfer its experience to other cities. The current Air Quality Action Plan of the Metropolitan Region (DSN°16/98 MINSEGPRES) is being modified on fundamental aspects, picking up the necessity to modernize it in order to reach the goals of air quality by year 2011, according to the statement of the actual plan.

This modification started in 1999. Three independent evaluations of the plan were also made during the year 1999: an International Audit, the Report Investigating Commission of the Camera of Deputies and the Evaluation Report of the Municipalities of the Metropolitan Region. As a result of this work, the document Air Quality Action Plan Proposal of the Metropolitan Region was elaborated and presented in March of 2000, in which the main limits, objectives and actions proposed are implemented in the new phase of the plan. Additionally, the Government of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, the World Bank, and the National Commission for Environment (CONAMA) held the Fifth Clean Air Initiative Workshop for Latin American Cities during October of 2000. The objective of this Workshop was to share the experience of Santiago, through the presentation of the Air Quality Action Plan Proposal for the period of 2000-2005. In the second half of 2001, citizens were asked to discuss and comment on the proposed plan, and this modified plan is currently being finalized.
