Dear Members of the Steering Committee
Clean Air Initiative in Latin American Cities,
Following the decisions adopted by the CAI-LAC Steering Committee (SC) at its last session held in Sao Paulo in July 2004, we are pleased to inform you about the status and latest developments of CAI-LAC, in particular on the selection of the Executive Secretary for the new CAI-LAC and the preparation of the Business Plan.
Follow-up on SC Decisions
1. EXECUTIVE SECRETARY. We are very pleased to announce that following a brief selection process, Sergio Sanchez has accepted the job of Executive Secretary of the CAI-LAC and manage the Clean Air Initiative Center (CAI-Center). Mr. Sánchez has been working in the field of air pollution control in Mexico City for the last 20 years. Among his most relevant experiences are:
- General Director of Air Quality Management and Pollutants Registry, Mexico’s Ministry of Environment
- Executive Coordinator, Air Quality Project in Mexico City, MIT
- General Director of Environmental Projects, Government of Mexico City.
We are sure that many of you have already had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Sanchéz and we are confident he will bring valuable experience and leadership to the CAI-LAC. Currently we are finalizing contractual arrangements, and hope Mr. Sanchez will be able to join us by July 2005 at the latest.
2. LEGAL STUDY. A legal study is also being carried out to assess different alternatives to establish the CAI-LAC as a non-for-profit and tax exempt organization in Washington DC.
3. NEW MEMBERS. As you all know the Clean Air Initiative is now expanding to accommodate new members from the governments in the region, including agencies from sectors other than environment at the city, state, and national level. We expect Sao Paulo to formally start welcoming the new members soon.
4. BUSINESS PLAN. We also would like to let you know that considerable progress has been made regarding the preparation of a new Business Plan for CAI-LAC. PA consulting (USA) and ARCA consulting (Italy) have been hired to prepare this Plan. Their main tasks are to seek potential new partners and donors and assess funding opportunities. PA consulting is focusing on the Americas, while ARCA is concentrating its efforts on Europe. It is possible that one of these firms will contact some members to gather additional information. We would like to thank you beforehand for your cooperation.
Next Steps
5.WORKING GROUP. In coordination with Sao Paulo, we are planning to call a working group to follow-up with the implementation of the decisions taken by the Steering Committee. The meeting would take place either in Sao Paulo or Washington DC by the beginning of July.
