This workshop is being organized by the newly formed Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollutants (TF HTAP) under the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP Convention). This workshop is a first step towards an assessment, to be produced by 2009, of the scientific evidence concerning intercontinental transport to inform international policy discussions under the LRTAP Convention. The goals of this workshop are to: reach a consensus on the metrics, methods, data sets, and assumptions that should be employed in evaluating and comparing different model predictions related to intercontinental transport where possible, build upon existing formal model intercomparison exercises run by the IPCC and others and extend these efforts to address the questions of interest regarding intercontinental transport identify the types of data, tools, and results that may be available over the next several years identify topics for future TF HTAP workshops and meetings and methods for improving collaboration within the TF HTAP between meetings. A proposed methodology and schedule for collaborative work will be presented, discussed, and revised at the workshop.
