Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment

Established in 1998, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies is an independent, non-profit think-tank based in Japan that goes beyond research to provide practical ways to protect the earth's environment and to realize greater sustainability and equity in the global community. While the outlook of IGES is global, the principal geographical scope of its activities is Asia and the Pacific.

IGES provides professional and secretariat support for the implementation of the Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment, a programme of UNESCAP. The Kitakyushu Initiative is a mechanism for the implementation of the Regional Action Programme, with specific focus on environmental quality and human health. With a mandate to achieve measurable progress in improvement of the environment in major cities in the Asia-Pacific region, the Kitakyushu Initiative focuses on sharing experiences of cities that have overcome pollution and improved the urban environment. The Initiative aims to increase capacity of local governments in air and water quality, solid waste, and urban planning. Activities include analysis of successful practices, implementation of pilot activities, and conduct of seminars/trainings.

With regard to air quality management, the Initiative carries out activities to determine the optimal balance of stakeholder roles to achieve targets.
