The World Health Organization (WHO), as defined by its Constitution, is the directing and coordinating authority on international health work. WHO's aim is "the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health". WHO belongs to the UN system of organizations but has its own membership and sources of financing.
To support countries, WHO works with national health and other relevant ministries and departments. Support may take many forms – consultant services, provision of supplies and equipment, opportunities for professional training, operational research, demonstration of new techniques, etc.
Among the many programmes supported by WHO is the Protection of the Human Environment. One of the objectives of this programme is to strengthen national capacity in the assessment, monitoring and management of air quality for health in target countries and areas of the Region.
