2005 Urban Air Quality Management Distance Learning Course
The World Bank Institute (WBI), in partnership with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), successfully completed a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop to prepare air quality management (AQM) experts and practitioners to deliver the Urban Air Quality Management (UAQM) distance learning course.

The training was held from February 28 to March 3, 2005 at the AIT Convention Center with participants from Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

This year’s ToT was designed specifically for university staff, government personnel and other AQM experts committed to delivering the UAQM course in 2005. Lectures and workshop sessions were given by Paul Procee and Vicky Pinpin-Feinstein, both of WBI, Nguyen Kim Oanh of AIT, and Puji Lestari of the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). The workshop provided a forum for AQM trainers to discuss substantive issues, challenges and barriers in delivering the course in their respective cities. It also facilitated a team-based working environment with opportunities to review, critique, or revise their plans for developing appropriate courses. Participants also discussed the need for identifying relevant modules appropriate for delivery as well as the importance of getting the support of local stakeholders and integrating local needs and challenges. The ToT provided group and individual exercises to assist prospective UAQM trainers improve their understanding and skills in appropriate delivery methods and learning strategies as well as clarify their roles as course facilitators.

As a result of the training workshop, the Bank received course proposals for deliveries in the following cities: Bandung, Terrenganu, Cebu City, Hanoi, Bangkok, and Mumbai. Schedules for delivery in these cities will begin from August of this year through the Spring of 2006. The Bank encourages the coordinating institutions in these cities to partner with other leading governmental and non-governmental institutions not only within their respective countries but if at all possible, with other regional or national organizations outside their countries as well. While most courses will use both face to face instruction and mediated delivery, there will be cases where some sessions will be delivered via distance learning if and when facilities and resources allow. These courses are therefore open to anyone in the region interested in taking the course. The aforementioned cities are at various stages of preparation but for those interested in obtaining more information on how to register and final dates for delivery, please contact the coordinators listed below.
