Arief Yuwono, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Environment of the Government of Indonesia, announced to the delegates of the 9th Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Environment that the Better Air Quality 2006 workshop will be held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in September 2006. BAQ 2006 is expected to gather about 800 air quality policymakers, experts, and scientists worldwide to explore new ways to prevent and reduce air pollution in their respective cities and countries. The Ministry of Environment of Indonesia will host BAQ 2006 together with the City and Provincial Governments of Yogyakarta, and the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities.
A Governmental Meeting on Urban Air Quality in Asia is being planned to be held in conjunction with the BAQ 2006 workshop. The Governmental Meeting will gather senior government officials and representatives of key stakeholders in Asia. The objective of the meeting is to support the efforts of Asian governments to arrive at more optimal air pollution abatement strategies. The Ministry of Environment of Indonesia will work closely with the United Nations Environment Programme and CAI-Asia in planning the event. Discussions are ongoing with the United Nations Center for Regional Development in Nagoya about their participation in the meeting.
